Kate Blechinger

Saturday, September 14th @ 2:10 pm
Jazz Alley | Alley Between 93 & 94 St

Kate Blechinger is an inventive and charismatic Edmonton based vocalist, composer, and
arranger. Originally hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, Kate takes direct influence from the vast prairie landscapes of her youth to create expansive, evocative compositions and arrangements for listeners to enjoy. Kate’s “jazz” is the musical equivalent of an artist’s palette, and is definitely a hybrid of sorts; she pairs the harmony, instrumentation and improvisation of more traditional jazz forms with the lyricism of modern jazz and folk genres. What results is a music that is personal, poetic, and playful – and one that involves audiences in a truly eclectic musical journey!

In November 2018, Kate released her debut album, Under a Dancing Sky, which features innovative folk-jazz arrangements of Joni Mitchell’s compositions alongside several of Kate’s original songs. This collection of songs is a tribute not only to Joni Mitchell, who celebrated her 75th Birthday in November 2018, but also to Kate’s experiences growing up on the prairies. Recently, Kate was honoured to receive the Jazz Recording of the Year award at the Edmonton Music Awards for her version of “Night in the City.”

Dan Davis is a saxophonist and educator from Edmonton AB. He completed his Masters in Jazz Studies at the University of South Florida in 2009.

The Writers’ Guild, a new music composition collective he co-leads received a WCMA nomination for their record “Based on a True Story.” In 2015 Dan’s composition “What Happens Next” received an Edmonton Music Award for Best Jazz Recording.

Dan has been fortunate enough to perform with P.J. Perry, Tommy Banks, Jim Head, Joel Gray, Juno winners Mike Murley and Kevin Turcotte, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, the Yardbird Suite Jazz Orchestra, the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra, and the Glen Miller Orchestra. Dan’s latest project sees him bringing the Baritone Saxophone to the front of the stage. This is the saxophone Dan started on back in 8th grade and is the instrument that allows him to speak most truly with his musical voice.

His music is inspired by the sweet-sounding Harry Carney and Gerry Mulligan, as well as the brash and sassy sounding Ronnie Cubert and Garry Smullian. Currently, Dan is an instructor at MacEwan University and the MacEwan Conservatory of Music at Alberta College. He gives masterclasses and performances around his home province of Alberta and across Western Canada.
