Sticks and Stone is a percussion trio centered on a “marimba band” concept. The marimba AKA “Grande Piano of Xylophones” is an instrument of North-West African origins, that made its way to Latin America with the slave trade. In the early 20th century, the marimba began to be incorporated into Western music. Sticks and Stone explores a wide variety of music including pop, rock, video-game, world, classical, ragtime, and jazz. They enjoy performing for an eclectic audience at a diverse range of fun events.

Brendan McGrath is an emerging pianist and composer from Edmonton, Alberta. Recently McGrath completed his undergraduate degree in jazz piano performance at MacEwan University, and has been spending the past while teaching, composing, and performing (and of course, practicing).

McGrath has spent his time studying with fine musicians such as Jerrold Dubyk, Joel Gray, Jim Lewis, Emilio De Mercato, Tom Van Seters, and Chris Andrew. Always a student first, McGrath continues to study the piano in private, constantly improving and pushing himself as a player and writer.

McGrath has a keen interest in all music. From the great fugue writing of J.S. Bach to the great songwriting of Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, to the freeform improvisation of Painkiller, McGrath hopes to incorporate a little bit of everything into what he does so he can help define what it means to play Canadian jazz in an effort to distinguish what we do as Canadians from the New York or Scandinavian scenes.

Saturday, September 14th @ 9:00 pm
Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse | 9351 - 118 Ave

Olivia Rose was born and raised two and a half hours north of Edmonton in the small, farming town of Elk Point, Alberta. Blending rural roots with an urban polish, her influences stem from classic country artists like Loretta Lynn and Tanya Tucker with modern elements from Miranda Lambert and Lady Gaga’s "Joanne" album. Currently gearing up for the mid-August release of her new single, “Put It Like That,” Olivia Rose is excited to launch a tune that’s a fun-loving, bubbly, drive with the windows down type of country song. “This song was written to show that relationships can be messy and full of emotion but still give you a chance to learn something about yourself,” says Olivia. Written with Alberta’s own Drew Gregory and recorded with CCMA award-winning producer Bart McKay, she is pumped to get it into the hands of country music lovers across Canada.

Olivia Rose has already performed alongside some of Canada’s best, including opening for Dan Davidson (2018), Brett Kissel (2017), and Aaron Pritchett (2017). Some other notable career highlights include performances at Big Valley Jamboree (2017), Taste of Edmonton (2018), Ranchmans Calgary (2018) and Toronto’s legendary Horseshoe Tavern (2019) and being named a top-12 finalist in Calgary's Project WILD - Country Artist Development Program (August 2018).

Olivia Rose’s singles, “Makeup to Mud” (2015), “Please Maybe” (2016), & “Hometown Sundowns” (2017) have won her many awards, including Rising Star (2016 & 2017) at the Edmonton Music Awards, the Edmonton Mayor’s Youth Award as well as multiple nominations (Rising Star, Female Artist) at the Alberta Country Music Awards.

This shaken (not stirred) trio yields a potent mix of what they like to call ‘B-Movie Bombshell Surf – with a Twang’. Amy plays bass like the devil and sings like an angel; Scott channels Dick Dale and Joe Strummer into his guitar; Ali D vibes behind the drum kit à la Gina Schock. With five self-released albums and a handful of singles under their belt The Frolics deliver a beachy buffet of dance, sizzle, and grit... Catch the wave!
