Saturday Night Headliner: Busty and the Bass

With their seamless blend of soulful hip hop vocals, rap, signature brass and synths, Busty and the Bass s ushering in a new era of genre-defying sound. After meeting in their first week of the McGill University jazz program, the Montreal-based nine-piece quickly shot up from from packed house party jams to scorching live performances in front of thousands of fans across the US, Canada, Europe and the UK.

After building a dedicated international fan base off of the release of just two EPs -- GLAM (2015) and LIFT (2016) -- Busty is taking things to the next level with their forthcoming debut album, “Uncommon Good.” They’ve enlisted veteran producer and mixer Neal Pogue to guide the project, who is best known for his work with the likes of Outkast, Snoop Dogg, Earth Wind and Fire, MIA, Nicki Minaj, Aretha Franklin, and Lil Wayne.

The new album builds on a smooth foundational sound reminiscent of artists like Parliament, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Michael Jackson, weaving in the contemporary influence of Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo, and James Blake. Each song on “Uncommon Good” feels like a single, from the brassy disco groove of “Up Top” to the Outkast-esque “Memories and Melodies” and the sensual, lyrical flow of “Common Ground.” The album synthesizes a swirling mixture of funk, soul, rock, hip-hop, dance music, and gospel that is layered, polished, and unified.

Busty’s natural chemistry and high-energy live show have made them an instant favorite with audiences around the world. Whether it’s your first Busty experience, or you know every time the cowbell comes in -- you’re gonna dance.

This coming fall will mark the beginning of Busty and the Bass' world tour in support of their debut album, “Uncommon Good”, set for release September 8, 2017.

Avec leur mélange homogène de chants hip hop et rap ainsi que leurs cuivres et synthétiseurs qui sont devenus une marque de commerce, Busty and the Bass a rapidement gravi de nombreux échelons. Les neufs membres qui composent le groupe se sont rencontrés lors de leur première semaine à l’école de jazz de l’Université McGill de Montréal, où ils se sont mis à jouer ensemble. En commençant par des sessions lors de soirées entre amis, ils ont rapidement été amenés à jouer devant des milliers de personnes à travers les États-Unis, l’Europe, le Royaume-Uni et bien évidemment le pays qui les a vu grandir, le Canada.

When a handful of CKUA staffers an informal ukulele band in 2013, no one could predict that in just four years the group would quadruple, come to include more non-CKUA members than staff, and even land a paying gig or two!

We’ve played in hot and cold weather; we’ve strummed and sung on the roof patio of our building, in a farmers’ field, in an alley and anywhere else we were invited. And we always welcome anyone who can bring their instrument (non-ukuleles welcome!) to our Wednesday noon practices at the CKUA headquarters at 9804 Jasper Avenue.

Quand une poignée d’employés de CKUA décidèrent de former un groupe de joueurs de ukulele en 2013, personne n’aurait pu prédire qu’en seulement quatre ans, le groupe aurait quadruplé, venant à inclure plus de gens qui ne sont pas des membres de CKUA que d’employés de la station, et qu’il aurait joué un ou deux spectacles.

Ils ont joué au froid et sous un soleil de plomb, ont gratté les cordes de leurs guitares et ont chanté sur le toit de leur immeuble, dans un champ, dans une allée et partout où ils ont été invités. Ils accueillent également toutes personnes qui apportent leurs instruments (que ce soit un ukulele ou non) à leurs pratiques qui se déroulent le mercredi midi aux quartiers généraux de CKUA.

Derek Plunkie, guitarist and Macewan graduate, leads his trio through his own fresh interpretations of the jazz standard repertoire. Heavily inspired by saxophonists John Coltrane and Joe Henderson in addition to the more recent work of guitarists Gilad Hekselman and Nir Felder, Derek’s dexterity across the fretboard and heavy arranging skills lend a fresh perspective to the classic tunes.

ETown Vocal Music Society

Since the fall of 2013 the ETown Vocal Music Society has been dedicated to bringing a cappella music to singers from youth to adults. Currently ETVMS has two non-auditioned choirs: ETown Minors for youth in grades 7-12 and ETown Augmented for adults. Our choirs operate with a unique rehearsal structure without piano accompaniment, relying on skilled professional vocal coaches and directors that understand healthy pop singing technique, as well as stylistic elements of both singing and arranging music for a variety of levels and voices. ETVMS believes pop a cappella adds an interesting skill set to the voice.

Depuis l’automne 2013, l’ETown Vocal Music Society a pour mission de rendre accessible la musique a cappella aux chanteurs de tous âges. En ce moment, ETVMS a deux chorales : ETown Minors pour les jeunes de la 7e année à 12e année, ainsi qu’ETown Augmented pour les adultes. Les chorales opèrent sous une structure de pratique unique sans accompagnement au piano, ne se fiant qu’au talent des mentors et des directeurs de chorale qui connaissent la bonne technique pour chanter des chansons pop, ainsi que des éléments stylistiques autant en chant qu’en musique d’accompagnement pour une variété de niveaux vocaux. ETVMS croit que la pop a cappella ajoute un ensemble de compétences intéressant à la voix.

Twenty year old singer songwriter Cassidy Zahar from Smoky Lake Alberta has been performing since age nine and continues to wow crowds with her strong, distinct and unique voice. Although rooted in classic country and folk, Cassidy loves performing all genres including Americana, rock, R&B, blues and jazz. Cassidy’s songs are filled with honesty, heartfelt passion and a sense of insistent truth. She’s a fan of simplicity and makes it a priority to use her songs to tell stories. Cassidy hopes those who hear her music will feel connected to the lyrics and find meaning within her carefully crafted words and thoughtful progressions.

Maintenant âgée de vingt ans, Cassidy Zahar performe depuis l’âge de neuf ans. Elle continue sans cesse d’émerveiller les foules avec sa voix distincte et unique. Même si sa musique est plutôt ancrée dans les styles country et folk, Cassidy aime interpréter de tous les genres, incluant l’Americana, le Rock, le R&B, le blues et le jazz. Les chansons de Cassidy sont remplies d’honnêteté, d’une passion ressentie et de vérité. Elle est adepte de la simplicité et se fait un devoir d’utiliser ses chansons pour raconter des histoires. Lara Tang is a singer songwriter based in Edmonton, AB. She has been featured on albums such as 'Where To Now' and various singles by contemporary artist Vaughan Hoy, 'The Therapy Sessions' by local hip hop artist J-Reds, and ‘Feminism’ by Sleeping In Traffic. Now after years of singing on albums, in rock bands and choirs, she is stepping out of her boundaries into the electro-pop world with an EP called The Experience Collection, released in November 2017. With influences like Paramore, LIGHTS, The Veronicas and many more, she has carefully crafted her music with raw lyrics that speak of taboo subjects such as anxiety and depression in hopes of shedding light.
