0Stella [oh-Stella] is the solo project of Edmonton-based, Irish-Canadian artist Liz Pomeroy. Ruthlessly authentic alt-rock blend with traditional Irish fiddle to create catchy pop melodies with oft-politically charged lyrics drenched in irony and rebelliousness. Reminiscent of Garbage, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, St. Vincent, PJ Harvey and The Frames, 0Stella’s music is both socially conscious and confessional.
Little Yes, Little Know, 0Stella’s debut EP, will be released in 2019. It was produced and recorded by JUNO-nominated, Brad Simons (Nuela Charles, Adult Contemporary Album of the Year, 2019), at his Velveteen Audio studio in Edmonton. The four-track EP features righteous rock songs amongst shimmering fiddle with lush, brooding laments. 0Stella says, “Brad was able to balance my love for sonic intimacy with blistering riot-rock”.
Written over the course of a year, songs such as the lead single “Fire” and “Pandora”, draw on personal struggles, to create a body of work that comforts hearts in a rising tide; be it physical or emotional. In recent years, the circular economy of the zero-waste lifestyle movement has influenced 0Stella’s songwriting style, creating protest lyrics like “bread and body over wine / breathing out your alibis / to ignore we’re running out of time” in the song “Wide Awake”. “Linen”, on the other hand, was inspired by the closure of the Magdalene Laundries (or Magdalene Asylums) in her native Ireland; a Roman Catholic institution, exclusively for Protestant “fallen women”, that ran from 18th to late 20th centuries; “That story broke my heart and has haunted me since I was a little girl”.
The EP, Little Yes, Little Know, features notable players from the Edmonton music community such as John Calverly on fiddle (music director, Vinok Worldance), Joel Jeschke on drums (Whale And The Wolf), Aretha Tillotson on bass (musical director, Matilda) and J Tilley on guitar (Klusterfunk).
During a solo tour of Ireland and the U.K in 2018, 0Stella shared the stage with notable names such as D-Day, The Violent Kind, Sinead McConville, Paul Gilbody and Jane Willow. A second European tour with a full five-piece band will follow the EP’s release. Formerly the lead singer of Calgary based alt-rockers, Burning Daisy (2011-2016), Pomeroy released one album, an EP and two singles, played SXSW in Austin, Texas and toured Western Canada three times.
